I am researching this flask but have not been successful. It is porcelain and is dated 1857 (in ink) on the bottom. It is about 5 inches tall. Any help will be very much appreciated.

Sorry, I don't have a good picture of the back or bottom available right now. It is in storage. I will try to get a picture soon.

I do remember the back is plain white with a simple pattern. The bottom was smooth but not perfect. The ink inscription said "U.S Grant -- 1857".
I assume you are trying to associate this with General Grant. My thoughts would be that it is a centennial or memorial type thing. The state of NY owns his cottage and it is run as a kind of museum or historical site. They might be able to help you with the identification.

I am most interested in the maker of the flask. I have an original newspaper article stating the flask was given to the family member by Grant. I established through a letter by Grant dated 1857 that the person met with this person.
I found out the maker of the bitters bottle was Schafer & Vater of Germany. They made a variety of flasks and bitters starting about 1890. Most likely this flask was made sometime after that. So, mystery solved.
