In 1891 David W. Davis was awarded his patent for a waiter's lever corkscrew. These are often found marked with " THE DAVIS CORK SCREW PAT'D JULY 14, 1891"

Shortly thereafter, Davis was awarded a patent for his pocket knife. The knife was included on the corkscrew, and these are marked "THE DAVIS KNIFE & CORK SCREW PAT'D JULY 7 & 14-1891"

The leg, mermaid, and fancy embossed waiter's levers feature an interesting neckstand, and these are marked "DAVIS "IMPROVED" PAT'D JULY 14-91 OTHER PAT PEND'G"

The other patent? Well, it seems that Charles Puddefoot worked for Davis's company, "The Detroit Corkscrew Company." And, in 1893, the Puddefoot patent was awarded and assigned to The Detroit Corkscrew Company.

Often these corkscrew were used as vehicles for advertising--Welch Grape, Greenway Brewing, Pabst, and others.

Well made, they still are usable, and are definitely a nice corkscrew that belongs in any collection.
