Amphora Sea Monster Vase
Bohemia, circa 1900
14" high
This piece has a powerful sense of motion. You can feel this sinister and muscular beast wrapping himself around a sea object, moments from his attack. Just what I love about so many Amphora pieces. You don't think of a vase when you see it. You experience an intriguing object with a personality that invites you into a relationship.
I was lucky to find this wicked boy because Amphora collectors only know of one other like him. You can see him in the dramatic Amphora video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZocaTgTtl4 or search YouTube for Amphora Pottery.
There is also an Amphora Facebook page: www.facebook.com/Amphora.Pottery.

very nice
Pleasantly terrified!
I love the drama of this piece. Such artistry, such craftsmanship - absolutely magnificent! How did you find it? Was it at auction or in a store? Perhaps a private collector? You are indeed very lucky!
I found him in an art gallery in Copenhagen hanging out with mostly Danish pottery. He looked like a foreigner in that crowd. The other one is owned by an Amphora dealer in Chicago. The monster is the same but the glaze on the rest of the vase is deep purple. Byron Vreeland, the author of the Amphora book Monsters & Maidens: Collector's Edition, has a vase that is the same mold in all respects except for the head. The head on his does not look like a cobra.
I love the romantic and sinister quality of it
I'm tangled in the cruel beauty,.........stunning piece.
