    New York & Erie RR Co. fixed globe railroad lantern made by tinsmiths H & J Sangster in Buffalo, NY, in the mid-1850s. Globe is beautifully embossed NY&E RR Co. The oil fount removes from the bottom and is nicely hallmarked H & J Sangster, Pat. May, 1851. Unlike New England fixed globe lanterns of this era, which usually do not have a wire globe guard, this one is guarded. The NY&E RR was the first RR to connect the ocean to the Great Lakes, originally built from Piermont, NY, to Dunkirk, NY. The bracelet-style bail is typical of RR lanterns from the time period.
