I was really surprised to receive this when cleaning out the grandparent's estate. Not everything came out at once. We found the victory medal one place, the hat another, and so on. It all came together, though. I have the Pants and boot covers too, but those aren't so glamorous.
The only thing "missing" from the uniform is the discharge stripe, not sure why his uniform doesn't have it. There's a lot of moth nips and I still need to give it a proper presentation (the hanger it's on is not at all to my liking).
The hat has the white text blacked out for some odd reason. If you have worked with cleaning this type of cloth in the past and know a good method to try to remove such a thing, I would be eternally grateful. I'm in charge of looking after this kind of family stuff.
MY gt. grandfather was a copper smith in the Navy, hence the "machinist" patch. I'll post some documents soon.

Nice grouping. Keep it all together. You can get a mannequin bust cheap on Ebay to display the uniform. Also, you should google search the ships name USS BLACK HAWK, and see what its history is. I am not sure if WWI Navy uniforms had honorable discharge stripes in WWI......And as far as cleaning it...You can try a dry cleaner you trust, but take off the medal first....
You may have already researched and found this out, but there were 3,646 victory medals issued with the Mobile Base clasp. To qualify, the sailor had to serve on tenders and repair vessels on duty east of the 37th meridian and north of the Equator between 06 April 1917, to 11 Nov. 1918.
I knew what the clasp entailed (USS Black Hawk was a tender I believe), but had no idea the award quantity was that small. Thanks for letting me know!

If you look at the service documents I have in another post, you will notice that he was only active until September 1919, while the photos are from November. It would be neat to see him there, but it wouldn't be possible!
I have my own image of him at sea (or at the very least, by it), in this uniform no less, so I suppose I have a better picture than the ones online ;)
