I bought this at an estate sale, the seller's father brought this back from overseas after serving in war & I have spent endless hrs. on the internet trying to find out some info on it. The ribbon around the cross has the words JESZCZE NIE NADESZLA CHWILA ROZGRZESZE NIA written on it, & the sun has 3MAJ on it. Artist unknown. Added a photo of the back of painting. This is 15x 20.

    Unsolved Mystery

well there is a mark on it that says 1830. Not sure if that is an Italian flag. Also those numbers may be years?? I am no expert. I bet it is commemorating some major historical event. Or an anniversary of an event. Do you know where the soldier served in the War?

Oh, this may represent the November uprising in 1830. There was a war between Poland and Russia. I believe that is Polish. I am not sure if the print is that old. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/November_Uprising

This print is full of symbols that have meaning for Poles.
      Thanks for sharing it.
It has lots of history within it.
      Many dates, many symbols.
      And religion too!

As trgrubaugh says there are a few of these images on the net.
      Each is slightly different.
All three are about Polish nationalism.

      The symbols:
Jesus and Mary Magdalene at the foot of the cross.
On the cross are two dates 966 and 1791.
There's also the Crown of Thorns and The Sacred Heart within.
There's also an anchor and wrapped around the cross is the expression: "JESZCZE NIE NADESZLA CHWILA ROZGRZESZENIA".
Mary Magdalene is wearing a crown.
Her veil of sorrow has three dates on it: 1772, 1793 & 1795.
The dove to her right also wears a crown.
At her feet are a flag with a ribbon tied to its top with the date of 1830.
There also a shield : The shield of the “January Uprising”.
All of this takes place on the banks of the river Vistula in Warsaw.
The sun shining in the sky has May 3 within its light.

      Explaining the dates:
April 14, 966 marks the beginning of Polish Christian history, commemorating the baptism of Mieszko I, who was the first ruler of the Polish state.

May 3, 1791 marks the Polish constitution; the world's second oldest constitution. It introduced political equality between townspeople and nobility (szlachta) and placed the peasants under the protection of the government, thus mitigating the worst abuses of serfdom.

1772, 1793 & 1795 refer to The Partitions of Poland or Partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. These partitions ended a period of Polish history called the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. The partitions were perpetrated by the Russian Empire, the Kingdom of Prussia and Habsburg Austria, which divided up the Commonwealth lands among themselves progressively in the process of territorial seizures. Poland didn’t become a sovereign country again for 123 years.

1830 refers to the “November Uprising”. It began on 29 November 1830 in Warsaw and is also known as the Cadet Revolution. It was was an unsuccessful armed rebellion against the Russian Empire.

1863 is a hidden date and is within the shield of the “January Uprising”: the Shield of Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth. It began January 22, 1863, and lasted until the last insurgents were captured in 1865.

In my mind Mary Magdalene is Poland.
Poland, a Christian country since 966 AD.
She is at the feet of Christ asking for forgiveness.
The reply came in Luke 7:50:
“Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” “
On the cross are symbols of Suffering and Hope.
She wears the veil of sad history: the Three Partitions.
But the crown on her head signifies that she is now a sovereign state.
There are reminders of Polish pride as well….
There are reminders about freedom in the May 3 1791.
The world’s second constitution, freedom for all men.
The glorious defeats, the “Uprisings” against Russia, Prussia and Habsburg Austria.
After World War I and the collapse of the Russian, German and Austro-Hungarian Empires, Poland became an independent republic. The picture can thus be dated to after 1918.

And then there's that message in Polish:
      "JESZCZE NIE NADESZLA CHWILA ROZGRZESZENIA"
I think it means something like: "All is not forgiven".

A bit of a grim warning that inevitably leads on to Poland and WWII, the Holocaust, the Cold War, Gdansk, Solidarnosc, the Polish Pope and beyond .....

Another image of Poland I found was this one:
