Good morning everyone ! Just wanted to share this item I found at the flea market this weekend for a 1.00. It is a reproduction of the plaque that was left on the surface of the moon on the first visit in July, 1969. It has copies of the three astronauts signatures , Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, Edwin Aldrin, and the president, Richard Nixon. I thought it was a neat item, because I remember growing up with Apollo and collecting articles and items related to it, ( Wish I still had them! ). I have been unable to find out what it might have been used for, it does not appear to have ever been attached to anything. I did find a 1" pin with a military clutch fastener, that looks like it, but this one is larger. It measures 3 1/2" wide, and 3 1/4" tall. I am wondering if anyone has ever seen one or knows anything about it. Thanks for looking. Thrifty Gypsy

The original Apollo 11 Moon Plaque is attached to the ladder on the descent stage of the lunar module "Eagle". It is made from 1/16" stainless steel measuring 9" x 7 5/8", and was "rolled" to conform to the curvature of the landing gear strut. It is located between the third and fourth rungs of the ladder, and is attached to it by four stainless steel straps. A thinner sheet of stainless steel protected the plaque during flight and was removed once on the lunar surface.
The Apollo 11 Moon plaque is the first of seven that were flown on all the lunar landing missions. This plaque depicts the two hemispheres of the Earth and bears a special proclamation that was read by astronaut Neil Armstrong and beamed back to Earth for the benefit of their world television audience.
"Manufactured exclusively by The Creative Source. Original NASA specifications and photographs were used to create these limited edition authentic reproductions. All Apollo moon plaques come with a Certificate of Authenticity. Only 5,000 will be issued, insuring their value as a fine collectible."
      Hope this helps.

Hey packrat-place, I went on Wikipedia and looked up Apollo 11 and it had a photo of the actual plaque on the landing gear sitting on the moon. How cool is that ! Do you think that mine is one of the 5,000 that were made by Creative Source ? It looks like it has had a few rough times, but I still love it ! Thanks, T.G.
