    No idea exactly when or where this was taken, but I would like to think it is aboard the Black Hawk in the north Atlantic somewhere. It has a generic post card back, probably never bothered to send it home and simply brought it back when he came out of the service.

    Didn't notice the ship in the background at first, but I think that makes the picture that much better.

    There looks like there is a patch below the rank patch, and around or above where the service stripes are now. Anyone know what that might be?

      Your great grandfather was a petty officer first class. the rating badge is on the left sleeve with the eagle facing left that would put him in the artificer branch or known as the lower deck rating, (machinist mate, Water Tender, Carpenter mate, etc).

      He was a copper smith, so yes you would be right.

      There were a few other photos of him around, but this was one of the only (if not the only) photo of him while he was in the navy. We let the rest of the family have the other ones.
