I bought this today, I instantly fell in love with it. I think it is an old safety deposit box. If I am wrong, let me know what you think it is.

This is a home-made thingy, the brass front is a post office letter box front, someone has made into this neat item. I love it . Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the info, I saw some on Etsy after posting this, I still love it!
Do you have the combination? I have sold many of these doors to people who want them to make banks. Mine, like yours has the two dial setting.
Mine was dismantled from a wall unit of a colleges Post Office. They appear in post offices all over the US for people that get their mail at a PB Box address. Most today have keys instead of a combination.
I do not have the combination. I usually don't run up on this kind of stuff and was very excited to get it along with a ton of other good stuff!
The doors are original and are many different styles available. The box is home made. They usually have a slot on top with a brass cover and used as banks. They are very nice. I have plenty of doors but I bought a very nice solid oak box off of ebay to make it a bank. They really show nice sitting around. Nice eye.
With patience you can figure out the combination. Each dial just has to be set to the right settings (no "going around twice") on either dial.
The easiest way would be to break the glass and use a inspection mirror to see the back and you can align the two notches to open it and you will have the combination. Then have a piece of thick glass to fit the opening. The glass is held in by two clamps with a screw each and is easy to replace.
Thanks for all the info and I will try to see if I can figure out the combination.
