I've been aware of these 'thorn' vases for many years but had not collected them. What attracted my attention about this one was its foot. The construction of the foot. It has two layers and each petal part is moulded into the shape. There are seven on the base level and eight on the upper level. I suppose it is done with a tool. The top of the vase has been ground smooth and the edges ground off. The body of the vase is not straight it is like a cucumber. A couple of flakes at the top but the thorns are intact.
My real disappointment with it was that it was a clear vase. It would have been nice to have colour as well. Them's the breaks.
It came from the Rozelle markets here in Sydney three months ago. The dealer thought it was English. I have an idea it is Czech. Any comments?
If it is Czech is it Kralik, Welz and Rueckl? Or is it Thomas Webb?
