Probably from the late forties to early fifties. Another stored Oldie. I bet this old lantern saved somebodys Life and limb, as well as signaling the Engineer.

Actually what you have is an 8 Day lantern probably made by Handlan, although Dietz made a similar model but with a different wire cage. These were primarily used by Public Works departments as highway or construction lanterns as the oversize fount held enough kerosene for up to eight days. For the most part the railroads did not use this model. The railroadiana.org web site has a page titled "nice but not railroad" in which this style lantern is shown in utility lanterns, 1956 Handlan catalog.

Thank's railnsail.I am glad you knew where this lantern was used. I just classified it with my R.R. lanterns because I didnt know how else to describe it, but now I know! Thanks again! Do you have a connection with R.R. and sailing?? Just wondering As you can see I have a connection with R.R. and Music.

Yes, I collect Railroad and my speciality is lanterns. I live at the NJ shore and also collect nautical antiques although anything mechanical that's old fascinates me. Music is an interesting field, I love to look for old pipe organs found in early churches and halls. Good luck collecting.
