One of the interesting things about the Nazis in Germany was the distrust they had for the Red Cross. Since it was an international organization the loyalty of Germans who were members of the Red Cross instead of more Nazi-German groups was suspect. This photo was taken in the late 1930’s, before 1939, and shows my grandfather at the head of his unit while waiting to take part in a parade. The two fellows at the left were higher officials who I assume were from the Bavarian state or regional level. Note the odd assortment of men; old, very young and the physically unfit for military service. The medals on the uniforms all indicate WWI service

Daggers: it would seem that the Nazis had a dagger fetish and wore them on all dress uniforms. My grandfather had a Red Cross dagger too but never worn it. I guess he thought it was out of place on a Red Cross uniform and never had to defend himself from someone who's life he was trying to save.
