Purchased at Thrift Store yrs ago we have used it to store a few magazines. It is all hand carved sits on 4 biscuit type feet. Has a heavy removeable galvenized liner with handles. Pic 4 shows hollow feet on bottom of liner so it dosen't sit directly on floor of container. Liner shows no marks of being used.No makers marks. No veneer quarter sawn oak. I think it is very old. Am I correct on it's intended use? Coal Storage? Thanks for your help, glad to share

That would be a scuttle box also known as a scuttle box coal hod. A very nice find and regardless of where it was made, being hand carved and original liner probably worth a couple hundred minimum. Lots of carved ones from England.

Ok, try this link or search for antique wooden scuttle box. The one at the link below is an example of what I am talking about. If you look at the pictures you will see the liner and even the handles on it are the same as yours.

Thanks for sharing it with us.

Thanks fhrjr for the website info. A little different being covered with brass plate and not hand carved. Still similar

Thanks scotts we just had an old pot belly wood stove. Ran out of wood during a cold winter and my dad burned old railroad ties. made a hot fire but oatmeal tasted like creseote. Bet we smelled like it also

If you do a search for hand carved or decorative antique wooden scuttle boxes you will find oodles of them. Most of the wooden ones listed on eBay are exotic hardwoods like rosewood or mahogany but have the same liner as yours. You can also find the better ones on sites like Ruby Lane.
