I just found this in an odds n ends box an an antique store. This is a Hindenburg Cross, the official name being the Honor Cross of the World War 1914-1918. This award was instituted and awarded during the Reich peroid, for veterans who served during WW I. The version with swords was for combatants, without swords for non combatants, and a next of kin award for those killed or missing. This particular award has the manufactures mark of G3. The WW I postcard shows Hindenburg reviewing troops wearing M-16 steel helmets.

Each of these medals had to be applied for with accompanying proof of service for the appropriate category. Over six million combatant crosses and over a million noncombatant crosses were issued. Of the next of kin crosses, over 345,000 went to widows, and almost 374,000 went to parents.
