Creative and visually striking designs are a hallmark of 1890s American folding cameras. The two folding cameras shown here are what I consider to be among the most interesting and beautiful models made during this 10 year period.
Characterized by a clean yet simple design, nice proportions and absolutely stunning wood finish, the 1892-93 “Rochester” (left camera) by the Rochester Camera Manufacturing Company is one of my favorites. It is hard to believe this type of craftsmanship was mass produced in the 1890s; but here it is in 100% original condition.
On the right is an 1896 Henry Clay Regular camera. It is the only known example featuring stunning lush brown body leather. This camera is a bit more complex than “The Rochester” as it was made for an advanced amateur audience. The brown body leather is believed to be a special order. As with the Rochester Camera, this Henry Clay Regular is 100% original and unrestored.
