Greatsnowy…
(119 items)

I was wondering if anyone knew if this was a Trevaise vase? From what I've read and the few pictures I've seen, it seems to have a number of hallmarks of being Trevaise. I've noticed a few with the rolled rim, it's got the button pontil, wear on the base, a number of the vases I've seen that are noted to be Trevaise have a aventurine type swirl in some of the swirls, this one has that too..

There seem to be a lot of checks in the yes category for me but I don't have enough information to know if my thought process is correct.. I was hoping someone out there might know.

I worked with the Sandwich Glass Museum curator doing research about Trevaise. There is a good article with photos in THE ACORN Journal of the Sandwich Glass Museum Vol.11 2001. You could contact the Museum on their web site or write SGM Box 103 Sandwich MA 02563. This is the only good source of info about Trevaise that I know of.
I posted three of my Trevaise vases earlier on C.W. under American Art Glass. Take a look.
The only thing about your piece that gives me doubt is the base color of the glass. Trevaise is most often done on dark green glass. As far as the rolled top, that is not a Trevaise hallmark. You have probably seen pieces that were wrongly identified as Trevaise. I have never seen a Trevaise vase with a rolled top rim.
    Hope this helps.

As an update The sandwich glass museum no longer does identifications. she said I should try the New Bedford Museum. I guess the person who wrote the 2001 article for the acorn resides there now.

Kirk says: Thank you for your query. This one is a tough call. The thickness of the glass, the button pontil and certain aspects of the iridescence suggest Trevaise. The shape has not been previously documented as Trevaise, however, and the red color is most unusual - also not previously documented.

Relatively few examples of firmly-attributed Trevaise glass are known, so it is likely that many shapes and colors were made there that we don't know about yet.

I would not be surprised if the piece turned out to be Trevaise. It's just not a strong attribution at this point.

Sorry I can't be more definitive."

So, I think I am safe giving this an attribution of Trevaise for the purpose of my collection. I think things have been attributed on lesser grounds before. :)

Looking at it again I agree with Kirk Nelson........I have never seen the redish-purple color on Trevaise.
There is also a chance it is Quezal. Quezal early on used a button pontil and I have seen Quezal shades in these colors. Quezal also had a paper label which could have been on the bottom. Just another thought.

I know I have seen the rolled lip on quezal too just googling around. but I haven't seen the aventurine like swirl in the iridescence from them. it's that that got me stuck on Trevaise. Have you noticed that in the quezal? If so it becomes a very strong contender IMHO.

I'll definitely keep my eyes open.

nice, this had a final bid of 6750 for those that don't have an account with live auctioneers. I wonder what the pattern is called. I think mine is nicer with the rolled lip.

Well, Quezal does indeed look most likely. Thanks for your input Frank and Jack. :) Given what I've seen I feel pretty comfortable with an attribution of Quezal.
