Can anyone please help me with the artist who drew this, his signature is hard to decipher I have emailed the theatre on numerous occasion but! have never heard back, would love to know so I could do some research and no something about him/her, thank you.

A bit more information... the paper has faintly down one side 'HAYLE MILL 29' and on the other 'HAND MADE' and in the top right hand corner...( a crown) R.W.S. (followed by the London address) GUARANTEED PURE PAPER. though this extra information may help.

Hoping someone here can help, I have been trying for years. Thank you for your interest and possible help.....:-)

Niagara on the lake was in Canada not the USA. You would have better luck asking questions on their site. Start with the event then work downward to the hundreds of items offered.

Looks like a nice piece if it is original.

Hello! thank you but! I have actually have emailed the 'Shaw Festival Theatre' quite a few times and have never heard back from them. Thank you for your link, I also have gone through their website and clicked on everything! trying to find something! but to no avail. I was given this many years ago and it is an original! I would just like to know a bit of it's story and who the artist is. Thank you once again for your interest and help.

hayle mill was a paper making plant

I googled Hayle Mill and found it made hand made paper popular with artist, which means that this must be an original painting, does it not? Thank you vanskyock24
    8. vanskyock24 vanskyock24, 12 years ago

Hi!.. no I have found a site that has Canadian sketch artists and painstakingly analyzed each name against ours, but! nothing anything like it ..:-( of course it may not be a Canadian artist but was worth a try, how about you? it's very frustrating isn't it?

The Artistic Director of the Festival at the time was Paxton Whitehead . I think he is still alive. He might well know some details.
    17. vetraio50 vetraio50, 12 years ago
The poster theme of the sea-side suggests the opening play of the Shawfest season in 1973: YOU NEVER CAN TELL. It opened the new theatre, with the Queen doing the ribbon cutting.

In all my searching I have! come across the famous photo of Bernard Shaw in his striped bathing suit and always thought that my sketch had something to do with it. I will take the time to read all the links that you have very! kindly given me and hopefully will find something about the artist. Do you think that I would some how be able to contact Paxton Whitehead, maybe through the Shaw Festival Theatre?
    19. vetraio50 vetraio50, 12 years ago
Not sure yet how to do that.
Perhaps he has a facebook page!
      Everyone else has one.
The other tangent I went on was about you NZ cartoonist David Low: problem is that he died 10 years before. Doh! But that last part of the signature looked a little like 'Low'. But why should it have been a Canadian or US artist?
Perhaps you should look further than North America!

There is reference to the new theatre having a new symbol: page 87 and the image is on page 91 of this document. This was full on promotion of the new theatre with important designers working on the project:

Thank you vetrio50 for all the above links, I have started to read through them.

I am in awe of your knowledge!

I had an email from the Shaw Festival this morning saying that they were looking into it for me, but! this was only after me writing again! three weeks ago asking if they had received my last! email, I am not holding my breath as I have been now trying to get some contact with then for over three years, but you never know! maybe I will hear from them, but not soon, I fear.....:-)

Now I know, I can start to read all about him. I would like to also thank those who I know have done allot of research on my behalf, it was very much appreciated.

Thank you Budek...I have loved him for a long time and as you can see I was more than a little bit pleased to find out who the artist was, but! I have to confess and admit my ignorance, I had never heard of him, but do now!!....:-)

I just inherited the same poster from my parents who were at the Shaw Festival in 1973. I was thrilled to find your post as I was just beginning my search of the artist. My husband and I are going to Niagara on the Lake this weekend for the first time and was planning on inquiring about the poster. Thanks for doing the work for me!! My poster is # 230/250/
    28. inky inky, 12 years ago
I am really pleased my post has helped you!

It took me 15 years before I could find out about mine, wasn't to bothered at first as enjoyed just having it, but then I started to wonder who the artist was and started to slooowly! research then and more intensively as time went on.

Came up so many brick walls but eventually as you can see with perseverance!.. mind you, you being on the spot might have been more successful sooner!

Nice to hear from you and I hope you have a wonderful weekend and if you find out anything else would love to know.....:-)

Duncan Ian Macpherson is well associated with The Toronto Star, the newspaper I read all the time I was in Toronto. I remember well his caracatures mainly that he did regularly for the newpaper in the 70's when I lived there. I know I talked with him once, and my best friend there LauraLynne was a caracature artist also.
