This is a nice c. 1850s quarter plate ambrotype in an unusual leather covered case: 4-84G (Berg, Nineteenth Century Photographic Cases). The case is deeper than most period cases and at first I thought that it might be a later case. However, the image has always been with this case and the "book" ID puts it in the period of the ambrotype.
The two children are identified in other images as Will and Lilly Macy-- Will is the older one in the dress!
