American Flyer caboose No. 484

I recently came into a small number of American Flyer freight cars and a damaged steam locomotive. The equipment is made of all metal and has a coupler style I've not seen before.

I am not a collector so I'm not sure exactly what I've got here but would love to know more about this piece (and some of the other pieces I have). Is this considered to be tinplate?

First photo shows caboose 484 with box.

Second Photo: Green flat car (no number) with wooden "pipes" and missing the two axles for the right most truck. Are parts available for this older style? Is this stuff worth collecting or did I buy some toy junk?

Type XI coupler used from about 1939-41 on tin O gauge cars. This style was carried over on the post war S gauge for a short time also. It was probably Flyers way of not paying Lionel royalties if they had used a knuckle coupler.
