I found this pass to be the most beautiful of all the passes I own. It is made out to Col. J. Condit-Smith, who built the Chicago & Atlantic. As you can see from this pass, he was the President of the Dunkirk, Warren & Pittsburgh Railway. Col Smith was also Chief Quartermaster for General Sherman during the Civil War. Col. Smith was also married to Justice Stephen Field's, Wife's sister. Making him a brother-in-law to Justice Field. All this information can be verified through Google searches.
I just wanted to share this great looking pass & get Col Smith's name out there since I found him to be a fascinating person, when I did my research.
The pass is signed by Jay Gould, who was removed as President of the Erie in March of 1872. I assume this has to be a rare pass since he was only there as Pres for 3 months in 1872. There is a .5 cents tax revenue stamp imprinted on the back of the pass. It has some light aging, but is in terrific shape for it's age.
