I have know idea about the history.
It was in my grandmother's home when she bought it in 1946.

I have the exact same chair, with possibly ever so slight variations in the wood carving. The chair was inherited from my great uncle who lived in California, but I do not know the history of when he acquired it or from where. Would love to hear from anyone who knows more about these chairs. I do not think of a monk when I look at the carving, I see an old sailor!
