When I went to grade school much segregation was all through the country . I was very lucky that I never knew about it and all the kids in my class's were just more kids . Color was never noticed . I moved to TX in last year of Junior High school and was shocked that only white kids went to my school and the others had to go to their own schools . It was a sad awaking to me . So I would sneak down the dirt road and talk to the kids there and got in trouble from school and other kids in my school . So these are from the 50's in 2 of my classes and all were my friends and I still do not see color . I was lucky I think :-)

Which one are you? Growing up with no awareness of the differences of color or ethnicity is indeed a blessing. Most children thrive best when they grow up in a home and environment where all are respected and treated honorably.

I was so fortunate to grow up where I did but also had no knowledge of what other parts of US were doing to kids . The biggest thing we worried about was being bombed :-)

My upbringing was quite the same. My Mom dated a cop from Watts for the first five years of my life and we never saw color, well, we saw all the colors, all the time, as my Mom loved a good party. I was shocked when I got to texas boarding school where there was only one black girl. We were jocks and bonded and became the only two girls on the boys soccer team, as they didn't have a girls team. Girls grow faster and we were a fearsome duo on the field. I never understood why so many kids didn't talk to her. She never said a word, only years later did I find out the kind of acts of "Hate" she endured, and see the true face of hatred when I moved to New Orleans, where the ignorant are so proud of their stupidity I felt guilty that I had not known because I would have tried to protect her from those racist jerks. Mani you are a good person through and through, and we can say that 'cos we've seen the "Litttle Dipper", Love your mind and story, Mich
p.s. The Cop from Watts was black. I had a huge piece of obsidion that had fallen off the towers that I kept for years, until I lost it when I went overseas. I loved that rock more than any possession I owned. Mich

I was born in '61. The profile picture is one of the few of myself I had downloaded in the computer. Being 50, the fact that I even know the word downloading is even a miracle. So I had newer photos, but most of them in "party mode" with friends, my smile is just a little too bright, betraying the "little too much fun" I was having!! So this photo should actually be in vintage paperphernalia, as it is at least 20 years old. I need to figure out how to download a photo from facebook and upload it on CW...unfortunately, that is beyond my technical grasp right now!! I have learned so much from simply joining CW. How to take a little better pictures, but mainly, how to get them on the computer and put them in letters or here on CW. That is like a momentous leap into the 21st century for me. I might as well have walked on the moon, relative to what I knew only a month or so ago!! I is also smarter since I been coming to CW school. I have learned about so many things that had never fallen in my range of experience, Loetz glass, for example!! You also, Mani, are a true treasure and I am so glad people like you and walk soft, hedgewalker,mikko, bellin and the list goes on, are here to so graciously welcome newcomers.
