This Cranberry Pickle Jar was my wife's grandmother's. I'm not sure the age but we are in our late seventys. Would love to know the worth for insurance purposes.

Nice Victorian cranberry glass pickle castor.

The glass looks to be in pristine condition, while most of the plating seems to have worn off.

First I would check and ensure that it isn't a marriage. Make sure the silverplate lid fits on the jar without any lateral movement. Check the jar itself to see that it has the same fit in the holder.

If both fit well, then it is most likely not a marriage.

Value would be in the $200- $300 range (assuming the jar is chip and crack free). If it had more silver or were replated it would be higher-- maybe to $400.

Sometimes it's difficult to tell with quadruple plate (especially in a photo) if the plating is worn off or if it's darkened from years of tarnish under a lacquer coating. These things were originally lacquered (in fact, I even have some pieces with original paper labels mentioning this and giving care instructions.) When found with their lacquer intact, even though they are black/gray they polish up beautifully. Hard to tell with this one. It does look like it could be worn, but I'd give it a good polish with a nice silver cream like Oneida. Wright's foam polish is good for touch up, but won't do the trick on this. Whatever you do, do not use Tarn-X.
