This is an early Civil War carte de visite (CDV) image that dates from about 1861 to 1862 and depicts a MN Volunteer. His 1SG rank can be seen on his sleeve.
These early MN soldiers saw most of their action in MN fighting hostile Indians during the Dakota War of 1862.
Photographed and backmarked by Whitney's Gallery, the premier MN photographer of this era.
