Poor Georgie... Died at 42... So young...
This brooch is the oldest in my collection... A Georgian brooch which is the period spanning from 1714 to 1837 thereabouts...
This pin is quite tiny, it reads George Rolfs/Rofs (not sure on the last name), 06 5 Jul 1812, Age 42. I love this piece because its my only Goergian item and I like its simple design and also I am starting to be interested in mourning brooches.. Some poeple think its creepy but I think its interesting! I also think Post Mortem photography is cool to... So go figure!
Two hundred years ago, in 1812, 42 was not a bad age!

George's hair has been lovingly braided and beautifully preserved under glass on the front of the brooch.

The name is probably Ross. That swirl is actually an 's'.
The Ob is short for the Latin word 'obiit': he/she died.
It seems he died on July 5 1812.
The AE means in Latin 'aetas' or age as you mention.
I suppose your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to find out who George Ross was and where he died, why etc.....

It's a beautifully understated Georgian mourning brooch.
Is it American or English?
1812 means Regency in England.
In 1811 George III was declared mad and his son ruled in his place until his death.
Mind you in the US the War of 1812 has its own significance too!
The Victorian ones are a bit OTT.
No gold marks?
It looks heavy and is well constructed.
