I have found 8 original etchings of Yale which I think are absolutely fabulous. The one shown says YALE Berkeley Oval 1914 HML. Does anyone know anything about them? There's also one that says Old Library, 1896 Gateway and Connecticut Hall, Osborn Gateway, Vanderbilt Sheff, Brattell Chapel, Phelp's Gateway and Vanderbilt Gateway. All say YALE 1914 and HML. I would appreciate any information anyone might have as to who HML was and anything else you might know about them. Thank you very much.

Mystery Solved

    Dear Louise,

These etchings are by a New England-born Hawaiian artist named Huc-Mazelet Luquiens (1881-1961). Luquiens was born into a family of Yale academics (his grandfather was the chair of French Language and Literature there, and his father was a professor of Spanish and French), and he received both his BA and MA from Yale in 1902 and 1908, respectively.

According to an ad published in The Yale Literary Magazine, Volume 81, Issue 7, Yale University Press commissioned Luquiens to create a portfolio of eight Yale campus landmarks, which were sold through YUP and the Brick Row Print and Book Shop near campus. It was published in an edition of 160, with 10 hors commerce.

A quick auction database search indicates that none of his Yale etchings have found their way to the auction market yet. While it is difficult to gauge the level of interest these works may realize without exact comparables, based on the larger market for his print works, I would estimate them at $800-1,200 for auction. I would expect the most receptive audience for this portfolio to be Yale alums.

I hope this information is helpful, and enjoy your portfolio!

    Kind regards,
    Kathy Wong
