A local antique store was closing down for months and had a Schoonhoven vase that had caught my attention. I liked the design of the jug. The shop was never open until one morning three weeks ago when I went in and saw the vase that I liked and another, smaller, orange one!
I couldn't resist them!
I like Dutch ceramics and glass. Orange is a favourite colour and the Dutch have a fondness for it too! Orange this and oranje dat! Oranje is the nickname of the Dutch soccer team, De Oranjes (plural of oranje, lit. "the oranges") is a shorthand term used to refer to the Dutch royal family; and on it goes. Leerdam celebrates each member of the Dutch royals with a new shape of orange vase named after them- the Oranjevaasjes: a tradition that goes back to 1927.

Jugendstil schenkkannen Plateelbakkerij Schoonhoven 48 & 581 Van Katwijk 1928.
They are made by the Plateelbakkerij Schoonhoven.
The larger jug is marked "48" and the smaller one "581".
I believe they were designed by Frans van Katwijk (1893-1952).
They probably date to about 1929 when the economic problems hit that led to the Great Depression. Decoration was kept to a minimum and many decorators were put off. In Dutch the term for these wares is: "Crisisgoed". At the same time the design of the wares became paramount. Other factories did similar wares by notable designers: Willem Stuurman, W.J Gellings & J. Leen Muller.
I love the handles of these two jugs: "twistvaas" is used in Dutch to describe the handles on vases. I'm not sure about the term for the handles on jugs.
