I had thought that my grandfather had brought these back from India when he returned to England after his 1930's RAF tour of India. My sister thinks my mum picked them up in Canada. They have a engraving on the back that says "China" but I am not sure if they are authentic Chinese brass. I'd like to know more about this item and the time period in which it was produced.

I think your sister is right. These are export brass plates made in China during 1950s - the first 10 years of the People's Republic of China. They are not in high quality, but they are authentic Chinese brass. The pattern is two dragons fighting for a pearl ball, and the word in the centre means Good Fortune.

Thank you some much sundaydriver for your insight into these items. I will leave this item as "unsolved mystery" until I garner a second source confirmation.
