I was very fortunate to have came across this gorgeous, very large and heavy Royal Doulton Lambeth Faience vase at an estate sale. I fell in love with it instantly and wanted so much to own it. Its sleek design with the contrast of bright yellow and subtle golds, browns, and greens on a lovely glazed cobalt ground was striking and very appealing. I was so excited to win this lovely vase and could not wait to take it home.
I examined the markings to the bottom which includes an impressed 1872-1904 Lambeth Faience stamp and impressed numbers 34 and 0, O, or D. Rather than an impressed stamp of the artist's initials, it includes the artist's initialed signature, a set of hand written numbers and another set of initials, "LH."
Considering its very large size of 18" tall, its extreme weight resulting from its thick walled construction (Stoneware or terra cotta?), the creator, the artist and era of creation, this is a masterpiece and a most stunning work of art.
