Here are more items from the eBay Lot I just acquired.
Photo 1- an envelope marked “SOLDIER STORIES” with fifteen 3x5 cards with amusing jokes, for example: “Any complaints, corporal?” asked the Colonel, making, one morning, a personal inspection. “Yes sir. Taste that, sir,” said the corporal. “Why,” the colonel said, “that’s the best soup I ever tasted.” “Yes, sir,” said the corporal, “and the cook wants to call it coffee.” Also in the photo are a couple newspaper clippings, one a picture of General George Reed, 2 Corps commander; and a photo of Generals Read and Simonds visiting the graves of soldiers from the 27th and 30th Divisions.
Photo 2 and 3 are real picture postcards of soldiers, both wearing mackinaw style coats, which were shorter style coats than the standard issue, and used by mounted troops and others such as motorcyclists. The first appears to have leather gaiters, typical of mounted troops. The second one has wrap-around cloth leggings. He also has an overseas stripe, and has turned up the collar of his coat as though fending off the cold, although both of these photos were obviously taken against photo studio backdrop. The second card is marked on the back “Guilleminot Boesptlug et Cie – Paris” and has a handwritten New Jersey address.
