So here I am walking down the street when I see this in a pile of trash. It was painted white. I dragged it home and took off the white paint and the three other layers that were on it. Underneath was this red milk paint color. I am curious as to how old this is. I notice a unique construction of peg and post on the corners. As well all of the legs are similar but uneven, as if they were turned by hand. Any indication of date and other info would be appreciated.

      What a great find!

I would think it dates from middle to end of the 19th century. How is the top attached? Can you post a photograph of the bottom side of the top.

Hi Scott -- thanks for the comment. A picture underneath will be of little help, (I don't think anyway) I can see no signs of nails anywhere other than on the top at two corner places but there are embedded far into the wood and covered up so I cannot discern nail shape. I would have to post an underneath picture later in the day.

Ok-- I was just interested in seeing how it was attached.

i think it is a wash stand without the original top,the top should have a hole to tack the bowl.

There are a lot of ink stains on the top -- perhaps it was simply a small desk. The top seems to match the bottom in color and age and layers of paint.

I think you are right in it being a wash stand-- I have seen many of these without the cut out.

i would say late 1800s wash stand made simple most of them never had a cut out the bowl and pitcher just set on top

Thank you fine contributors ralph, scott and vansky-- Wash stand it is -- late 1800's sounds reasonable to me. I appreciate your input.
