William Reeves Artists watercolor paint box c. 1784 to 1789
    British Made

William & his brother Thomas Reeves invented the watercolor block or cake as it is known, making the painting of watercolor more portable.

Before this colors had to be prepared by the artist or a colorman and the paint dried out easily.

In 1784 William and Thomas split into two businesses by their individual names.

The Reeves brand is still going today!

I too have an interest in the history of art materials, especially watercolor. It is great to see someone focus on this area. Your web site has lots of interesting stuff and I liked the links to paper makers. Thanks
