I got this from a dealer in Canada, these were made by Native Americans to sell to the tourists there and the tourists who traveled from the United States to Canada. It opens up and you see the other small baskets inside made to hold scissors, pin cushion, thimble and loose needles. All but the needle holder are fastened in place so they are not lost. This looks like it was never used, probably just placed in a glass cabinet so it could be seen. The colors are still vibrant which is nice as usually they are faded due to sunlight. I love all Native American basketry, even the touristy ones. They helped the tribes financially stay solvent even as their rights as people were taken away over and again.
