These 2 dolls are both hand carved . One one very tiny it is not a peg wooden penny doll but similar. The very large doll has a carved bun a very stern look about her and I would date her mid 1800's . She is 17 inches tall . The small one is compared to a quarter . The large dolls body fits more with peg wooden dolls but much more jointed and detailed . Not the prettiest of dolls but hold their place in history .

These are incredible, mani. As a certified Tomboy I must give you the kudos for making me interested in Doll collecting. At the tender age of fifty, I finally get this Doll thing and it is fabulous, as you say, in a historical context. The faces, the materials used in composition and construction, it is part of the evolution of the "Manufacturing Sector" in America and around the world, but I certainly adore these pre-machine dolls. They just make me wonder about what little girl had that doll and why does the one doll have such a stern face. maybe it was like a babysitter for the little ones. "You see that doll? Well she's watching you and if you misbehave in any way or don't do your chores, that Dolly will tell me!!". My imagination, at it again, Love these mani, thank you, mich
Thank you Michelle and so glad you see the history of these dolls :-) I kind of decided that the large one was really a school teacher . But I also imagine the little girl that loved it and it was saved to show others the ingenious of a time of poverty and the maybe the dad worked on it for year while she slept at night . I just let my mind drift back in time too :-) We have to fill in the blanks ourselves when there is no history on them . Thanks for your nice comment and glad I converted you lol
