The height is about 6-8 inches but its a type of stone that is kind of transclucent, it is very nicely designed but I think it is very rare because its a carved stone that I have no idea what type it is, the stone itself looks a little opaque. If you have any idea what it is email me at

Hi, this is very likely soapstone. The mauve and black is frequently seen in carved chess sets from Korea. You should be able to scribe a line with a sharp knife on the base, as soapstone is quite soft and will mark easily. Regards, Jim

Hi, ziggy1, if there is not some marking on the base, which there dosen't usually seem to be, there's no way I know to determine the age. I have several pieces and only one small carving has any indication of a date: 'San Diego Exposition' in very fine gold filled (probably paste) script on the side. This would place it in 1917 or c. 1935. As to common, all I can say is that it's the only one that I've seen. Perhaps someone else will recognize it. Good luck, Jim
