Admiral Franklin Buchanan was a career navy officer who left the US Navy to join the Confederate Navy at the start of the Civil War.
He was the first superintendant of the USNA. He is probably best known as the Commander of the CSS Virginia during her battles at Hampton Roads prior to the battle with the USS Monitor.
