This cabinet card image dates from the 1880s to 1890s and shows an African American occupational.

The man is standing in a doorway and is holding a whip by his side.

There is no photographers information on the mount, but the image is most likely American.

Reproduction of this image in any form is not authorized.

    Thanks for looking.

If he is holding a whip he may have been a cracker. He is outfitted somewhat better than most were during that era. The outfit and the whip would say boss man.

I'd call it a buggy whip and it is pretty typical of what I have seen in other images of the era showing a horse pulled buggy.
