On my website I've got a little section called the "Private Reserve". It features some of my most prized corkscrews that I've collected over the years.
This piece is an American corkscrew. It was patented in 1886 by Wilber B. Woodman. I think that the description in Fred O'Leary's CORKSCREWS book can best explain how the mechanism works.
"The clever ring and spur locks the handle during the penetration, then released to allow the steep pitch shank to thread up through the handle."
