I just got this today. It is an old Alaskan Tlingit Spruce Root basket, made somewhere between 1890 and 1920. It is about 8 and 1/4 inches high and about 9 inches in diameter. It is large and has the names Nellie and Leonteen embroidered on it using the "false embroidery" weave. I have never seen one of these with someone's name woven into it and I know it is a rare find for sure! I am still pinching myself as I cannot believe I have it in my home..lol. It does have two places on the rim where there is a tiny bit of damage but because of the rarity of having the name on it I do not think it matters much. The rest of the basket is fine, it is a bit faded though I think but that is to be expected based on the age. I have done a bit of research and as of yet have not found anything on the name, so I do not know if the name is of the person whom the basket was made for or if it is the name of the woman who wove it. Either way, I am very happy to own this beautiful piece of art.
UPDATE: The more I research the names, I am finding that Leonteen is a first name also. So, it is possible that Both Nellie and Leonteen (possibly married?) had their names woven on this basket.
