Pressed fibre WW11 fire watchers helmet, with rare experimental chin strap. Also shown with a pair of Fire Watchers goggles. The Fire Watchers were normaly civilians who were placed at various points around tha city, during a bombing raid (good grief!!) often on roof tops, to watch out for fires starting in buildings. When an incediary bomb fell and began to burn, they would approach it as close as they could, to push it off the building or dump sand on it. The goggles were to help protect the eyes from the fiercely burning bomb, but still allow them to see where to dump the sand from the bucket !!!! I was also told that they were used by anti-aircraft units to help protect the night vision from the gun flash, but I am not sure about that.
