This is my oldest and best condition older pocket knife I own. American Shear & Knife Co. started out just making shears in 1853, later they started making knives in 1870. By the turn of the last century, they had dropped shears from the line all together. By 1914, they had sold the company to Waterville Cutlery and later that same year the factory burned to the ground. If you can ever find an "American Shear"stamped tang from this company, BUY IT! This knife is called a Swell End Jack, in ebony wood handles.
