Here is my latest restoration fixture. I have collected indoor gas fixtures for many years, but this is only my second early electric restoration. I am guessing that it must date to approx late 1880's or early 1890's, as it looks a lot like a kero library lamp I recently restored. Anybody have more information? Thanks

Is it hanging correctly? wait I just turned my monitor on its side and it looks ok now, really it would be nicer looking if I didn't have to do that.

Hi! It looks like an "eternal light" that hangs in some Lutheran, Episcopal and Catholic churches. When the lamp is lit it signfies that there is "blessed" host on the premises, ie. bread and wine.

Might be a possibility. I think this was a gas fixture in its first life. Probably was converted to electric very early, hence the canopy and chains.
Is there a light in the bottom glass also ??
No, just on top. I may add a light at the bottom, too. That would be really pretty! Thank you for responding. I really love the things you collect.
What color is the globe? I'd tend to disagree about the 'eternal light' idea unless it is cobalt red, kinda even if so because it doesn't look to have any particular christian symbols on its metalwork, and because those sorts of lights are nearly always 'oil lamps' instead of gas. (sometimes electric nite-lite bulbs sneak into 'em these days, but those church folks are cheating...) It is beautiful, no matter what it is! :-) :-) :-)
...yeesh, not 'cobalt red' of course, but RUBY RED...cobalt is for blue... <headdesk>
Awwww, thanks for the nice comment. The bottom part is red glass. One of my posts shows a jeweled electric lamp. It actually has a small socket and bulb in the base. I have thought of doing that with this light, but just never got around to doing it yet. It would look really pretty, I think! Thanks for your comment!
