I don't remember when I started collecting these Tonala. I don't know much about them but I imagine they were picked up by people vacationing in Mexico. I don't know if they are exclusive to Mexico or the history of the form. Usually well crafted and nicely painted animal subjects. I also like them because they are usually very affordable. A fun thing to collect.
I'm hope some of you art pottery or folk art collectors can add a few interesting comments.
