Found this at a thrift store awhile back and was wondering if it looked familiar to anyone. Its 13 1/2 inches high and about 25 inches around at it's widest. Has an incised bird like creature (gryphon?) on it and a signature on the bottom that I cant make out at all. Looks like there is some wear in the glaze or it could be just a bad glaze job. Glaze is greenish with blue spots around the mouth and on the bird man. Not sure if it is Southern, or an artist work or just a reproduction. Any thoughts are welcome. Can try and take better photos if that would help.
This is a really nice jug, and I have some ideas about it.
First, I think it was made within the last 30 years. Second it is "Salt Glazed". Third it has unusual decoration, most probably a "Devil" figure.
Because it is salt glazed, it required a certain amount of expertise. The kilnl must be fired with wood and salt is introduced to the firering to provide the glaze.
If I were you, I would start my research by geographical location. Check for Art Schools in your area that have Ceramic Professors that specialize in Salt Glaze pottery. Also look for studios that specialize in Salt Glaze.
Lastly, the signature looks like Almens, do a google search for variations with "Salt Glaze"

I deciphered the sinature to be Yavony. Maybe this will help you, good luck.
I searched for both names and came up blank. I am not even sure if the signature is upside down or not. It could be. But thanks for trying. Would love to figure out that signature. I tried tracing it myself and then flipped it upside down. It looks like "Winrlo" but it could also be "Minrlo"? Frustrating.
