This is a lovely, heavy piece of cast iron ... something. The antique dealer I bought it from didn’t know what it was either. I’ve done a lot of internet searching and am no closer to solving the mystery than when I started.
Several people have suggested that it’s an embosser, but the plates on the jaws don’t come off. When I press a piece of paper in the jaws, I get a fine diamond pattern that’s of no real use to me.
If you can identify this, I’ll be forever grateful. I don’t have much to offer in return. Well, I will happily send you some 100% cotton, handknit dishcloths if you’d like. Really!
Any info you have, please email me at ioneskaggs@gmail.com.

Awesome! Thank you!
What an awesome site and Rob in Hawaii has my gratitude. After Rob identified my "check protector," I looked on eBay and found a similar -- but not as nice -- piece listed for nearly 5 times what I paid. As the kids say... "WOOT!"
Oh, Rob, I was serious about the dishcloths. If you're interested, please email me (address in my post above) and let me know if you have a color preference. :) Thank you again!
