I would say you did just fine on it. It will clean up nicely and shine with a coat of wax. It's a pretty big one, some people think bigger sign equals bigger payday but that's not always the case. I believe the yellow is an indicator that it might be Canadian.
Yes very good buy, these are pretty common in Canada, but still valuable, its a Canadain 48" button made in 1950's should be dated on the bottom or top. These buttons sell up to 1000$ in mint condition yours is easily worth 250$.
