Greatsnowy…
(119 items)
These are the miracle vases. They just arrived all the way from England with nothing to protect them but for a few sheets of bubble wrap and some very thick paper.. no boxes or anything conventional like that... but they are here.. in great shape with a whimsical depiction of day and night. Featuring a hand gilded owl and rooster with a moon and sun. Both vases have both of the features. You can see the individual artistry when you look at the owls side by side. there are very clear differences in the detail. It's a terrible picture but I think it's still visible.
I am not an artist, So I do not really know how long it would take to do something like that but when you think of the time that went into making each and every decent quality piece of glass that was sold back then it's really amazing.
This style of glass was originally made for the 1851 exposition but appears to have been made for a long period of time. I have another vase in the same shape from the earlier period, the decoration on these suggests late 1800's to the teens for a time period. They have a tremendous arts and crafts feel.
The earlier pieces have an orange classical decoration featuring Greek or roman scenes. Those same styles were later reproduced by the company but in an updated fashion as well.
