Gilt bronze (ormolu) candlestick; a putto holding fruit. Alabaster base.18th century.
It is 8 inches tall.
Gilding bronze technique (ormou in French): finely ground high-carat gold in a mercury amalgam applied to bronze and fired in a kiln.
Lost wax technique of casting bronze ( cire perdue in French) makes very fine detail possible.
Examining the base screw fastener is important, too; old fastening screws had less lines per linear inch.
