Going through some old boxes of family heirlooms, my husband and I came across this, just sitting in the box. We have no idea who this was, it may have even not been a relative as far as we know. It's a bit worn, but is tight an hasn't fallen apart or anything and we were wondering what this might be worth, if anything.
Nice image-- it looks like a tintype and probably dates from about 1865 to the early 1870s.
The subject will add to value. It appears to be a mourning image. I believe the woman is holding a photograph of a recently departed family member (mother or father maybe?). The flowers are probably associated with the mourning motif as well, although I cannot identify them.
The image has been put into the case upside down. Usually the image is on the right side when opening the case, so there may be some more information in the back of the case. If you take the image out, you may find an obituary or some more information on the subject and her message.
Size will also play a role in value. Assuming it is a Sixth Plate (about 3" X 3 1/2"), I would put an auction value of about $35- $50. If it is a smaller image, then closer to the low end or slightly under.

Thanks! Yes, it does appear to be the 3"x3 1/2". I can't tell who is in the photo frame she is holding, but that makes sense......photo and flowers=mourning. I wish we knew who this was, or if it was even a relative. I carefully pulled the photo out and there is nothing behind it unfortunately, but I was then able to put it back in on the right side :-)
