I just got this little beauty today, and I love it! This basket was hand made in Winston Salem by Don Corbett in 1971. Don used oak splits and old Red Paint (Milk Paint), which looks like what you would see on a primitive, early cupboard. Absolutely great old patina and paint has aged well. It is 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" in size, and I placed a coin (about the size of a quarter) next to it in the pics so you can see the comparison.
This basket is among the best you will find old or new. A super example of a lost art. Notice the weaving around the handle attachment. This is a great example of Southern Folk Art. It is signed and dated by the maker himself, he placed his initials on the handle of the basket.
I understand that he made very few of these baskets, and they are rarely ever seen. Only a small portion of the miniature baskets he made were painted. I am so happy to have been able to see one of his baskets up for sale, and to be able to add it to my own collection. It already has a special little place in one of my curio cabinets, along with my other miniatures. Enjoy the pics :)
